1983 – The beginning of David’s retail cake store business
When David first started David Cakes of Distinction retail cake business in 1983, he taught a few basic cake decorating classes at his home based workshop in Liverpool England.
After his cake store opened in 1984, David was asked by his local Liverpool audience to teach evening classes weekly. But this was to be only for a few months, as increased demand for his bespoke wedding and celebration cakes forced him to put his teaching journey on hold.
2010 – The transition from retail cake store to international cake decorating academy
Over 20 years later after having had the honour of creating a Royal Engagement Cake and 2 Royal Wedding Cakes for the British Royal Family as well as creating many wedding cakes for both celebrity and society clientele and winning many national training and business awards, David started receiving requests both nationally and internationally for him to teach his free-hand / freestyle creative cake decorating art.
So now the time was right and David joined by his assistant Edward started to teach cake decorating classes once again during evenings and weekends, sharing his knowledge of free-hand / free-style creativity with Royal Icing, initially teaching a small group of 3 to 4 students who travelled from the local Liverpool area to attend classes at his newly launched cake decorating academy which was located at his retail cake store premises.
At the end of each class, with big smiles on their faces, proud students shared their achievements to the camera and David shared their photos and creative stories onto David Cakes facebook.
It wasn’t very long before many UK students started travelling to Liverpool to learn from David, soon to be followed by many International students travelling from all over the world…
International demand to learn David’s free-hand / freestyle technique
Along with students travelling from all over the UK, David was also most honoured to receive international students travelling from USA, Canada, Trinidad and Tobago, Puerto Rico, Spain. Portugal, Italy, France, Ireland, The Netherlands, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Romania, Poland, Russia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Slovakia. Israel, Germany, Turkey, Egypt, Bahrain, Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, U.A.E. Kuwait, Australia, Macau, Taiwan, Philippines, China, Japan, Hong Kong, Sri-Lanka, India, Maldives, Nigeria, Kenya and Ghana.
Classes were made up of a mix of first time cake decorators, owners of small cake businesses and other students who were sponsored by large corporations to attend, all excited to learn David’s free-hand / free style cake decorating techniques and embrace his creative ideas and retail cake store business experience.
An invitation for David to share his art and creative technique around the world
Within a few months David was being asked by bakery and cake decorating academies to share his knowledge and creative techniques to audiences at many international corporate seminars and conventions taking place around the world.
By the end of 2012 large international corporations started reaching out to David, requesting him to attend corporate lifestyle events as their international guest of honour. David was invited to give after dinner speeches about the 2 Royal Wedding Cakes he created for The Royal House of Windsor and the history of cake decorating while demonstrating his creative art form.
The end of an era as a new one began
With such a high demand from students wanting to learn his Royal Icing technique and time being taken up travelling around the world, David felt the time had come to focus on teaching full time and he started to ease off from creating wedding and celebration cakes for his retail cake store business which he subsequently he closed in 2014.
Sharing over 37 years of retail cake store experience
However, David’s retail cake shop experience has not been wasted as he continues to share his 37 years of retail experience and business insight to all his students who attend his in depth and intensive training programme modules.
Combining his retail experiences with his creative art, along with the technical and scientific knowledge he received during 2 years of intensive college training (where at 16 he was awarded Distinctions in City and Guilds Cake Decorating) David’s cake decorating masterclasses are continually in high demand from his UK and international cake decorating audience.
2018 – David has returned back home to teach in Liverpool
After travelling the world David has returned back to his roots and now teaches cake decorating masterclass courses exclusively in his hometown of Liverpool. He is enjoying every moment of meeting and teaching new and returning UK and International students who are travelling to David’s Cake Decorating Academy in Liverpool to learn free-hand / free style cake decorating techniques and embrace his creative ideas and retail cake store business experience.
What a journey!
David’s journey has been an incredible one. Starting his little business from a spare room in his humble family home, to being invited to travel around the world and share his passion for his creative art.
It really is for the love of free-hand / freestyle cake decorating that motivates David to continue what he loves to do.
David expresses his sincere thanks to all his cake decorating friends:
“It is such an honour to have been asked to share my knowledge and creative art. I am overwhelmed that so many people enjoy what I do and even more joyous that they want to embrace the art, to preserve and share it. I feel very fortunate to have met so many beautiful people on my journey and most blessed to have been given the opportunity to travel around the world and embrace so many different cultures which continually uplift my spirit and inspire my creativity. I thank you so much 🙂 ”
