Gaining inspiration through re-invention
During David’s Cake Craft cake decorating masterclass courses in Liverpool England, David encourages his students to create how they feel and express a creative idea as and when ‘it arrives’ within the creative mindset. This means once a new design pattern has been created, it can then be re-invented into another new design pattern and so on – therefore the evolution of a design pattern is never ending.
Free-hand piping patterns can be used collectively within a complex design as illustrated above or used by itself and then embellished with new design ideas – resulting in a totally new design as seen below.
Whether using left or right handed approach whilst piping Royal Icing free-hand, David always addresses the piping consistency – whether it is too stiff? or too soft?
Depending on the consistency, what piping tip he is using combined with the pressure he is piping will determine the outcome of a pattern that is being created.
As more and more embellishments are piped on top and around the original pattern, the creative possibilities start to be realised, especially if the entire design is ‘mirrored’ in reverse and floral arrangements are added to accentuate the pattern. The result is a wider extended design pattern that could be an ideal for a lavish wedding cake border.
Changing the colour of icing transforms the look of piped design – with endless creative possibilities!
David concludes ” Once a cake is covered in fondant or coated in Royal Icing, buttercream, etc, it is my blank canvas that is waiting to be created upon. I get very excited as I take a few moments to decide where to position that very first piped shell! Once I begin piping it is like a journey, I take a new direction after every squeeze of the piping bag, spontaneously creating where my imagination decides to go. For me free-hand piping is more than cake decorating, it is a collection of my emotions as I enjoy expressing how I personally feel and I love every creative moment!”
